Definition

The IP index allows to determine the waterproof level electrical appliances against foreign bodies such as dust and humidity . It indicates to what extent the device is able to defend against these particles.

The IP index is written on two digits : the first gives the level of protection against solid bodies (from 0 to 6), and the second indicates the level of protection against liquid bodies (from 0 to 9). It is classified according to the international standard IEC 60529 (EN 60529 for Europe and Asia). This index is therefore essential to know the resistance characteristics of any electrical product.

Application of the IP protection index

The IP index finds its applications in all areas composed of electronic equipment . For example, in the industrial field , equipment such as lamps or electrical boxes is subject to this standard. You will also need to refer to it if you want to buy a smartphone or tablet with certain waterproof characteristics . The simplicity of this index makes it a widely used international standard.

Example of IP 55, IP 65, IP 67 indices

IP 55 : Protection against small amounts of dust and against water jets.

IP 65 : Total protection against dust and water jets.

IP 67 : Total protection against dust and total waterproofing up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.
