Why use a DIN rail mount power supply?
The flexibility of DIN rail mounting systems allows for faster installation and devices can snap onto metal rails with ease. Power supplies can be easily organized on DIN rails in closed-wall enclosures or in areas with limited space. Similar devices can be mounted next to each other to reduce the amount of wiring required. Most power supplies are cooled by convection. Also, no cooling fan is needed.
DINC rail mount AC/DC power supplies are widely used in most automation, instrumentation and industrial applications. They are used to power a wide range of DC powered devices including sensors, motors, actuators, solenoids and relays.
Things to Consider When Purchasing a DIN Rail Mount Power Supply
DIN Rail Size: There are three common types of DIN rails. Omega, G section and C section. Most are 7.5mm or 15mm deep. It is advisable to check that the power supply is compatible with DIN rail mounting.
Types of protection: it is important to choose a power supply protected against short circuits, overloads, overheating or overvoltages. Some power supplies also offer a hiccup mode which allows the external power supply to resume operation once the fault has been cleared.
Adjustable or Fixed Output Voltage or Current: In test systems, it is often convenient to have an adjustable DC voltage. However, in other applications a fixed DC power supply may be essential.
Wiring: Input/output lines to and from the power supply should be as short as possible with a large cross section to help reduce noise and heat.
Efficiency: Choose a power supply with efficiency greater than 89% to minimize the amount of power dissipation, especially if the system relies on convection cooling.
Input voltage range: If the DIN rail mount power supply you are purchasing is to be used in Europe and North America, as well as the United Kingdom, a universal AC input range of 80 VAC to 264 ACV is necessary.
Standards: If the power supply is to be used in the United States for controlling electric motors, it must comply with UL508, the safety standard for industrial control equipment.
