This is the continuation of the first part of the Tutorial: OMV Installation
Creation of users
Now that the file system is created and mounted, we will be able to create our folders, but we must first create our users.
To do this, go to “Users” → “Users”.
Creation is simple, basically the account will be placed in the "Users" group but you are free to manage the groups as you wish.
Creating shared folders
Now that the user has been created, we will be able to create Shared Folders. These shared folders will become visible from computers on the network, provided you have the rights.
You must go to “Storage” → “Shared folders” to create one.
Enter the name and select the previously created file system.
Please note, it is not possible to create a folder on the disk containing the system, which is why you need a disk for the system and then one for storage.
Enable SMB/CIFS service
Windows, Mac and Linux natively support the SMB/CIFS file exchange protocol.
This is the one we are going to configure here.
Go to "Services" -> "SMB/CIFS" -> "Parameters"
Check the box for activation then go to "Services" -> "SMB/CIFS" -> "Sharing"
and add a share as follows:
Assignment of access rights
In order for the user we created to be able to access the share, we must assign them the rights. To do this, go to “Users” → “Groups” .
Then add a group.
We are going to add the "Users" group because it is the one that was assigned by default to the user we created but, of course, change it if you used a defined group.
We put the user there as a member and register.
Go back to "Users" → "Groups" , select the newly created group and edit the permissions (the folder icon with a key).
Assign read and write or read only rights, then press "Save".
Congratulations, you have configured your NAS system with SMB/CIFS sharing.
Added features and updates.
The basics of the installation are done but there is still plenty to discover. Here are some features to know about.
Updates
To manage updates for the Debian OMV distribution, you must go to "System" -> "Update Manager" -> "Updates" .
There are some essential plugins such as a file antivirus, a browser or even a One drive synchronization plugin.
Dashboard and widgets
On the home page, a message will tell you that the dashboard is not configured.
You can configure it to add widgets: "Dashboard" -> "Settings"
Once configured, you will have a quick overview of the server status on the home page.
For further
Please note that OMV can have many more features added, whether via community plugins or via command line modifications and settings for the more experienced among you.
The community is active, you will find what you need by searching a little on Google.
