5G Railway Gateway for On-board Networks

The InHand VG814-NRQ3-W-G-R is a rugged cellular gateway designed for metros, trams, and trains. ITxPT-compatible, it combines 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi 5, GNSS positioning, and edge processing in a device built to withstand the constraints of railway installations.

Documented Railway Applications

The VG814-Rail can provide the necessary connectivity for passenger Wi-Fi, passenger information systems, on-board video surveillance, digital signage, and vehicle sensors. Its platform also enables diagnostic data collection, remote lifecycle management, and integration with InHand's documented cloud services.

5G and On-board Wi-Fi Connectivity

This global variant supports 5G SA and NSA Sub-6 networks, as well as the LTE and WCDMA technologies indicated in the manufacturer's datasheet. Its two Mini SIM slots and link backup functions contribute to communication continuity. Wi-Fi 5 operates at 2.4 and 5 GHz, in access point or client mode, with 2 × 2 MU-MIMO.

Positioning and Edge Processing

The GNSS receiver utilizes GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou constellations. The integrated accelerometer and gyroscope support Dead Reckoning when satellite reception is degraded. For local processing, the gateway supports C/C++, Python, and Docker developments, as well as FlexAPI over MQTT, HTTP, and TCP.

Interfaces, Network, and Security

The four Gigabit Ethernet interfaces on M12 connectors facilitate the connection of on-board equipment. RS-232, RS-485, CAN, USB links and digital I/Os complete vehicle integration. Software features include static routing, RIP, OSPF, BGP and VRRP, an SPI firewall, ACLs and IPsec, OpenVPN, L2TP and GRE VPNs.
